# Boats that log with Saillogger

A few boats on the chart carry more than AIS broadcasts: their owner's photo, a journal from the trip, and the real logged track of the passage she is on. What that is, and why it can disappear.

Most of what you see on AIS Fleet is what a vessel broadcasts over the air. A few boats carry more, and this page is why.

Some boaters keep their logbook with [Saillogger](https://saillogger.com), our companion product for boat owners: a device aboard uploads the boat's position and instrument data, and Saillogger writes up every trip automatically. When such an owner chooses to share, that work reaches AIS Fleet too.

You need no Saillogger account to see any of it, and nothing you do here requires one.

## What she carries {#boats-that-log-with-saillogger}

Open one of these boats and her panel can hold, on top of the ordinary AIS lines:

- **Their own photo of the boat**, published from their Saillogger profile. It leads her gallery, and unlike a catalog photo it carries no watermark and no credit line, because it is the owner's own picture of their own boat.
- **Her journal**: the dated notes and photographs posted from the trip, in the boater's own words. It opens as a card and reads full screen, twenty entries at a time, and tapping an entry takes the map to where it was written.
- **Her voyage**: the real logged passage, drawn from her own log rather than from AIS, so it is the track she actually sailed rather than the fixes a receiver happened to catch. **Hide voyage** puts it away and **Show voyage** restores it. It is the passage she is on now, not her season and not her back catalogue.
- **Her own position reports**, sent from aboard whenever she has an internet connection, so she can keep moving on your map where nothing ashore is receiving her. This is why a Saillogger boat sometimes crosses an ocean on the chart while the traffic around her goes dark.

**AIS track history stays available on the same boat**, including the seven-day and thirty-day windows on the paid plans. Choosing one replaces the voyage line so the two histories never overlap, and it stays selected even if the owner's voyage is still loading; **Show voyage** switches back.

## It is the owner's choice, every time you look

All of it is decided by that boater, and it is re-checked every time you open her rather than fixed on the day you followed her. The controls are in their Saillogger settings, on two tabs:

1. **Sharing** decides whether you get the detail at all: the journal, the logged voyage and their photo of the boat.
2. **Integrations** decides where the marker itself comes from: her own reports, or only what AIS receivers hear.

**A journal or logged track may disappear if the owner changes their sharing settings or access password.** That change alone tells you nothing about the boat's condition. AIS positions can still be shown when reports reach the network.

## If the boat is password protected

Some boaters put an access password on their pages. Following such a boat offers you the choice: enter the password and you see everything they share, or follow with AIS positions only.

You can enter it later from her panel, and if the owner changes the password you are asked for the new one. Until you have it, she behaves like any other AIS vessel.

## If the boat is private

A boat her owner keeps private is followed the way any AIS vessel is, showing her broadcast position and nothing of the owner's own. That follow does not reveal the owner and does not open a message to them.

Following respects the owner's privacy settings. Messages can become available if the boat is claimed on AIS Fleet, the owner later chooses to be reachable, you share an active fleet, or a conversation already exists. [Messages](https://aisfleet.com/docs/messages.md)
